T IS FOR TOUCHDOWN: A FOOTBALL ALPHABET

T is for Touchdown: A Football Alphabet has simple, playful rhymes that give any aspiring quarterback a reason to cheer.

From: Huddle up for H now.
The head coach called a play --
a handoff to the halfback,
who might go all the way.
To: T must stand for Touchdown --
six points on the board.
Someone missed a tackle.
That's the player scored.

Seasoned veterans will huddle together with the fact-filled sidebar information:
The tackle – using the hands and arms to bring the ball carrier down to the ground – is the basic element of defense. But the touchdown is the goal of every football offense. It is scored by running or passing the ball across the opponents goal line. The defense can also score a touchdown by returning a turnover (a fumble or an interception) into the end zone. Touchdowns are worth six points.

“Youngsters age 5 and older will undoubtedly focus on the rhymed passages while older members of the family will enjoy the ‘small print’ passages that cover a lot of pigskin trivia. It’s a ‘win-win’ situation because either way the book can be enjoyed at the same time by different age groups. Now that’s smart thinking!”
-- Salinas Californian

“From ‘Amazing Athletes’ to ‘Zebra stripes worn by referees,’ this football primer explains and celebrates ‘this game of inches’ for children of all ages.”
-- Asbury Park Press

“As in the other books in this outstanding series, it is crammed full of facts and stories about the sport, so it’s really for any age.”
-- Omaha World
